MetroApp Link: Create Metro Apps Shortcuts on Windows Desktop

I love Metro Apps and I know there are many Windows 8 users who love Windows 8 Metro Apps too. Windows 8 Metro Apps is a unique concept and Microsoft introduced its promo last year in Windows 8 Developer Preview version. As of now, you only have the option to access Metro Apps from Metro Wall and no option to start Metro Apps directly from Windows 8 Desktop. If you would like to add Metro Apps shortcut on the Desktop, you will not find any option in Windows to do this. It is inconvenient that you can’t add your favorite Metro App on the Desktop and Taskbar.

But now users who would like to access all the Metro Apps directly from Windows 8 desktop can use a new small freeware application called MetroApp Link. It is a very compact and portable tool which allows you to add the shortcut link of your favorite link on the Windows desktop. Along with desktop shortcuts, you can use this application to pin Metro Apps to Windows 8 Taskbar. I will explain about how you can do this later in this article.

When you check the image above, you will see that there is no special configuration to be done in order to create a shortcut of any Metro App. You just need to press the Create shortcut option for each Metro App to get the shortcut of your favorite Metro Apps on the desktop. You can place shortcuts for each Metro App on the desktop by clicking on them one by one. MetroApp Link 2.0 supports shortcuts for the following Metro Apps – Music, People, Reader, Video, News, Weather, Photo, Mail Travel, Games, Maps, Messaging, Sport, Store and Finance apps.

How to pin Metro Apps on the Windows 8 Taskbar?

You can do it in the same way as placing other applications on the Windows Taskbar. Use MetroApp Link and create the Metro App shortcut on the Desktop. Now right-click on the newly created Metro App shortcut on the desktop and select the Pin to Taskbar option. You can also drag & drop Metro App directly on the Taskbar to pin them.

MetroApp Link works well in Windows 8 in both 32bit and 64bit versions. I found only one drawback for this otherwise amazing application and that is it can’t support any third party Metro Apps. However, it is possible that the developer will solve this issue in the next version. It is a completely free and portable application.
